Flinders Chase National Park Visitor Centre
A Partnership for Good
Bedford-Backed GreenInc is proud to present its recent work partnering with the South Australian State Government on the new Flinders Chase National Park Visitor Centre at Karatta on Kangaroo Island. After being devastated by the 2019/20 bush fires, the newly rebuilt sustainable, information hub for tourists and local visitors is a gateway to some of Kangaroo Island’s most iconic attractions of Admiral’s Arch and Remarkable Rocks.
Building Landscapes from the Ground Up
Working together with the Department of Environment and Water, GreenInc completed the landscape construction of the Visitor Centre over the course of three months. At the centre of the landscaping project was GreenInc’s installation of the ‘Log Courtyard’, a collection of salvaged logs from around the island installed into one of the building’s courtyards. Featuring 11 hand selected pieces of deadwood, this installation is a reflection of the ruggedness of Kangaroo Island.
In addition to being built with fire resistant materials, the Centre has an installed irrigation system to protect the state of the art building and its features. The Centre’s irrigation system uses sustainable practices to collect water, with the supply being reliant on the construction of the roof line to feed down into the dam that supplies the irrigation system. In conjunction with this, to ensure that the Centre is prepared for any emergencies in the future, there are extra tanks and fire fighting tanks to guarantee safety of the building and its visitors.
Project Quick Facts:
- 300m3 of mulch brought over from ‘The Mainland’.
- Rock and rubble sourced and recycled from Kangaroo Island.
- Local stone Laterite used throughout project has magnetic properties.
- The Centre’s water source is recycled from its roof-line and dam.
